- Certificates should be ordered via an online application, but paper copies are also possible.
- Registers from the former German territories are not available in full and only if the place of birth belonged to Germany at the time
- An expense fee of EUR 30.00 is charged for the examination of these documents, even if no entry exists, plus the cost of issuing a certificate if an entry exists

With a birth certificate, you can prove the birth of a person, their first and last names and the details of their parents. You can have a birth certificate issued on the basis of an existing birth register. If the place of birth is outside of the Federal Republic of Germany, the birth can be registered at Standesamt I in Berlin.

Required documents
To apply for a birth certificate you need:
- if applied for by a representative:
- Written authorisation from the authorised person,
- their identity card or passport (original or certified copy)
- and the identity card or passport of the person being represented
- certain persons must also demonstrate a legal or legitimate interest.

Prerequisites
Civil status certificates contain personal data, so their issue is subject to data protection restrictions.
- Eligible applicants (minimum age: 16 years):
- the person to whom the birth certificate refers
- the spouse or civil partner (within the meaning of the Registered Civil Partnership Act)
- Ancestors and descendants of the person concerned
- Siblings with a legitimate interest
- Other persons, including close relatives such as aunts and uncles, only receive a certificate if they can credibly demonstrate a legal interest (e.g. by means of a letter from the probate court).

Prepayment: NoFees are charged for the issue of a birth certificate in accordance with Berlin state law. Currently, one certificate costs EUR 12.00, each additional certificate of the same type ordered at the same time costs EUR 6.00.Procedure
- In principle, a certificate can also be applied for in analogue form, but we strongly recommend using the online application to speed up the processing procedure.
- In addition to yourself, a person you trust may also order the certificate for you. A written power of attorney is required for this.
- You will receive a notification of fees when the certificate is sent to you.

Legal remedy
If the issuance of the certificate is refused, an application for an order can (only) be filed with the Schöneberg Local Court in Berlin. The appeal procedure is only possible with regard to the notification of fees.
