- If a child is born while travelling on a German-flagged sea-going vessel, it must be reported to Registry Office I in Berlin.
- The nationality of the parents or the child is irrelevant.
- The custodial parent and any other person who was present at the birth is obliged to report the birth if the parents are unable to attend.

If a child is born during a voyage on a seagoing vessel that is authorised to fly the German flag, there is an obligation to report the birth to Registry Office I in Berlin. The custodial parent must report the birth to the skipper. If the parents are unable to attend, any other person who was present at the birth is also obliged to report the birth.

Required documents
- for parents who are married to each other
- Parents' birth certificates, if necessary with translation, legalisation or apostille
- Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register, if necessary with translation, legalisation or apostille
- for parents who are not married to each other
- Birth certificate of the mother, if necessary with translation, legalisation or apostille
- if paternity has already been recognised:
- Declaration of acknowledgement of paternity and the mother's declaration of consent
- Birth certificate of the father
- the declaration of custody, if applicable
- all with translation, legalisation or apostille if necessary
- Parents' identity card, passport or a recognised passport replacement document
A marriage certificate and proof of dissolution of marriage must also be submitted if the marriage has since been dissolved or the husband has died within 300 days before the birth of the child.

Prerequisites
If a child is born on a German seagoing vessel, notification is mandatory. This applies regardless of the nationality of the parents or the child.
Costs (fees, expenses, etc.)
Prepayment: NoNotarisation in the register of births at Registry Office I in Berlin is free of charge.Prepayment: NoFees are charged for issuing a birth certificate in accordance with Berlin state law. Currently, one certificate costs 12.00 EUR, each additional certificate of the same type ordered at the same time costs 6.00 EUR.Procedure
- The custodial parent or - if unable to do so - another person who was present at the birth must report the birth to the skipper.
- The required documents should be enclosed or submitted at the next opportunity to the Registry Office I in Berlin. Ordered documents can be sent to you.
Deadlines
The report must be made immediately to the skipper by the person obliged to do so. Immediately means without culpable delay.
