If the passport has gone missing, i.e. cannot be found or has been lost, the passport holder is obliged to report the loss to the passport authority immediately.

If your passport can no longer be found or has been lost, you must report the loss immediately (notification of loss).
There is no obligation to apply for a new passport. If you still require a passport, you must apply for a new passport.It is not possible to issue a replacement document.

Notes (special features)
You cannot take your passport with you immediately after submitting your application, as it is produced at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. If the passport is needed earlier, an express passport can be applied for.

Abroad, the passport authorities responsible are the foreign missions of the Federal Republic of Germany designated by the Federal Foreign Office. The passport authority in whose district the applicant or passport holder usually resides is responsible.
