Apply for a temporary passport

A temporary machine-readable passport will only be issued to you if the time for issuing an express passport (production time max. 72 hours) is too short and it can no longer be issued in time for the first use.

• Current biometric photo, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal photo without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
• previous passport
• Identity card
• a civil status certificate (birth/marriage certificate) may be required, e.g. if the spelling of the name is unclear

From 1 May 2025, only digitally created biometric photographs will be accepted in the application process.
The photograph can be taken by external service providers (e.g. photographers) who make it available to the passport or ID card authority in a cloud for retrieval.
Alternatively, digital photographs can usually also be taken at the passport or ID card authority.
If necessary, find out before your appointment whether the photo can be taken at the authority.
Printed passport photos you have brought with you or digital passport photos you have taken yourself will no longer be processed.

It is no longer possible to issue an Express Pass in good time.

You must come in person to apply for a passport (e-passport). The application will be completed on site with the clerk. All you have to do is sign it.

Personal attendance is essential because of the handwritten signature on the application form and the identity check. Identity can be proven by means of an official photo ID. This is usually the identity card or the previous passport.

However, the passport can also be collected by a person authorised in writing who must provide proof of identity.
