Electronic proof of identity: activate for the first time

    When collecting the ID card, the citizen declares in writing to the ID card authority whether they wish to use the electronic proof of identity. The identity card authority then switches on the electronic proof of identity function.

    This decision can be changed at any time during the period of validity of the ID card by written declaration to the ID card authority.

  • Required documents

    • the current (child's) identity card or valid (child's) passport or birth certificate,
    • for children under the age of 16, a declaration of consent from a parent or guardian,
    • if there is only one parent or legal guardian, additional proof of custody,
    • a biometric passport photo (according to the photo sample table)

  • Prerequisites

    • German within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law (GG)
    • Registered in the municipality with main residence

  • Costs (fees, expenses, etc.)

    • when collecting the ID card: free of charge
    • for persons who received their ID card before the age of 16: free of charge
