Anyone who is 16 years old and regularly available for operational and training duties can join the active service of the volunteer fire brigade. As a rule, entry into the youth and music departments is permitted from the age of 11. Children from the age of 6 can be accepted into the youth department for the purpose of fire safety education.

The State Fire Brigade Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is currently running the second round of the "Heads wanted" campaign to recruit young people and members. With the new campaign module "Make your child proud, join the volunteer fire brigade too", the media partner Ostseewelle Hit Radio Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is using regional radio adverts to promote volunteering.
