If your passport has expired, you must apply for a new passport if it is still required.
Basis for action(s)
Required documents
- a valid identity document (passport, identity card, child's identity card, child's passport),
- a recent passport-sized photograph (45 x 35 mm), portrait format, frontal view without border, without head covering and without covering the eyes (biometric photograph),
- Your previous passport,
- Your birth certificate,
- when applying for a child :
- ID of the parent/guardian present, the declaration of consent and a copy of the ID of the parent/guardian not present, proof of custody if only one parent/guardian is present.
From 1 May 2025, only digitally created biometric photographs will be accepted in the application process.
The photograph can be taken by external service providers (e.g. photographers) who make it available to the passport or ID card authority in a cloud for retrieval.
Alternatively, digital photographs can usually also be taken at the passport or ID card authority.
If necessary, find out before your appointment whether the photo can be taken at the authority.
Printed passport photos that you have brought with you can only be processed in exceptional cases.Procedure
You must come in person to apply for a passport (e-passport).
The application will be completed on site with the clerk. You must confirm the accuracy of the personal data and your German citizenship and provide your fingerprints.Author
