Information from the Stralsund Roads Department – Overnight full closures of the B196 between Süllitz and Sellin

Dear Sir or Madam, on 24 February we presented the 2026 annual construction programme to the public. If you missed this event, we would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to a specific construction project on the island of Rügen in October. The road surface of the B196 between Süllitz and Sellin is damaged and needs to be replaced. This will require the replacement of the surface and base courses. Due to the narrow width of the carriageway, traffic cannot be maintained on one side of the road during the construction work. A diversion is also not possible, as there is no suitable road with sufficient width and load-bearing capacity to accommodate the traffic from the B196. Furthermore, the existing tree-lined avenue does not allow for a temporary widening of the carriageway or the cycle path, meaning that a construction site bypass is not feasible. For these reasons, the road resurfacing must be carried out during full night-time closures without a diversion. The section of road is open to traffic during the day. Following the autumn half-term holidays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the ‘Süllitz’ construction lot, approximately 700 metres in length, will be the first to be carried out using this method.

Construction work in October 2026 will be carried out subject to the following conditions:

  • The B196 will be closed for three nights (from approximately 8.00 pm to 6.00 am each night) to allow for milling work and the laying of the binder and surface courses
  • During the day, the B196 will remain open to two-way traffic at reduced speeds whilst construction work is underway
  • An emergency diversion route is available at night for the ambulance service and the fire brigade
  • The confirmed closure dates will be announced approximately four weeks before work begins
  • The remaining sections will also be renovated using this construction method from 2027 onwards

As soon as the contractor has finalised its plans, the Stralsund Roads Authority will publish detailed information on the roadworks schedule.
